Composite Resin is a polymer based material filled by ceramic particles. The advancements in the past 20 years has seen significant improvement to the materials strength and aesthetic.
It is the most flexible dental material, both in its usage and characteristics.
Composite Resin can be carefully adapted to tooth structures with minimal or no cutting to tooth structures, and can often blend into the tooth structure seamlessly. This makes it an ideal material for minimally invasive dental veneer material. It also allows the dentist and patients to immediately change the smile with simple addition and reduction to best suit the patient’s preferences.
Unfortunately, due to limitations of current generation of materials, dentists are still hesitant to apply this as a long-term veneering material. The average expected life-span of the composite veneers range between 5-10 years, with higher possibility of repairs required due to chipping and staining which may compound to long term cost to the restoration*. We often recommend this treatment as a minimally invasive option and for those patients who are new to the veneer dental treatment for its reversibility and conservative nature**.
* Repairs incur a standard restoration cost.
** Tooth preparation varies significantly between individuals. Your dentist will be able to advise this on examination.

Dental veneers are thin shell like coverings that can replace the front surface of your teeth giving you a whiter, even coloured smile. It has the benefits of masking the tooth underneath and closing gaps.
Two of the most common type of dental veneers are composite veneers and porcelain veneers. Both are great options for those wanting to change their smile, but it can depend what you wanted to achieve with your smile treatment and how much you wanted to spend.
Veneers are fairly conservative also; unlike that of a traditional crown which was often used in cosmetic make-overs in the earlier days of dentistry, a veneer is only applied to the facing surface of your teeth. In suitable cases no drilling is involved, which means minimal discomfort and maximum tooth tissue preservation.
Usually this is done in pairs to best match the colour of mirroring teeth, and sometimes up to 8 can be placed at once to produce an even level of whiteness and tooth shape.
For any typical veneer treatment, it may take up to two or three treatments. At Hornsby dentist, our qualified dentists will come up with the best treatment plan for you depending on your circumstances and what ever concerns or questions you may have.
Veneers may be suitable for you if you wanted to treat:
- Damaged, uneven teeth
- Slight misaligned teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Heavily discoloured or stained teeth, that have failed to whiten with whitening treatment
Prior to treatment your oral health will need be assessed to ensure you are a suitable candidate for treatment. Having gum disease, dental caries, weakened thin tooth structure or sensitivity you may to be suitable to have treatment.
Composite Veneers are made from resin and micro/nanoscopic filler particles. The colour of composite resin can be chosen to achieve the desired shade for treatment.
Composite veneers Hornsby are made bonded directly onto the tooth’s surface in multiple layers. Each layer is cured (hardened) with a UV light until the veneer is formed. Each veneer is shaped and polished to its desired shape, completing the veneers in a single treatment appointment.
The veneers generally do not require as much tooth preparation compared to porcelain veneers, however this may depend on your individual case.
Pros of Composite Veneers
- Lower cost when compared to porcelain
- Less enamel removal, can be additive to teeth (no preparation required)
- Treatment can be completed in one appointment
Cons of Composite Veneers
- Not as durable as Porcelain veneers – are prone to breakage and chipping
- Pick up stains more readily than porcelain veneers
- Shorter life span compared to porcelain veneers – last for approximately 7-10 years
It has a ceramic material shell like coverings, like composite resin, the colour can be chosen to achieve the desired result.
Porcelain veneers require preparation of the tooth’s surface, where a thin layer of enamel is removed allowing the veneer to replace the front surface of the tooth without it sticking out. Afterwards your dentist will proceed with taking an impression of your prepared teeth, which will be used to make the perfect custom-made veneers for your smile. In the meantime, whilst waiting for your porcelain veneers to be made temporary veneers will cover your teeth.
Whilst waiting for your porcelain veneers to be cemented, it is important to understands that your temporary veneers as the name suggests are less strong than the permanent veneers, so they will require extra care.
At your second appointment, your dentist will try on your porcelain veneers ensuring the shape and colour is correct for your smile. Some adjustments may be conducted and the final veneers are cemented onto your teeth.
Pros of Porcelain Veneers
- More durable and less prone to chipping when compared to composite veneers
- Pick up less stains
- Wider range of shades, can go whiter than composite veneers
- Ability to block out the underlying teeth better
- Can provide a more natural appearance depending the shade
Cons of Porcelain Veneers
- More expensive than Composite Veneers
- Treatment is permanent, as the tooth is prepared underneath
- May require multiple appointments, not single visit
Porcelain Veneers: Emax is one of the most popular, dominant dental ceramics around, indicated for a variety of treatment options, most notably, dental cosmetics. Dentists have successfully utilised this ultra-strong dental ceramic for more than a decade with proven track record.
Our dental ceramist based in Sydney is pleased to present us with a discounted rate due to our work volume and to benefit our patients, we feel it is important to pass on this discount. We also have a CEREC machine which can handle simple cases less than 6 teeth, and is ideal for those who are in a hurry as it can be completed in a single-visit.
We strongly recommend for cases with more than 6 Veneers to be completed in 2 visits minimum as the smile design process is rather complicated and the dentist may recommend a trial period with temporaries prior to placing the final Emax veneers.
A night guard may be advised by the dentist to protect the veneers.
