Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth is a common problem in Australia. Hypersensitivity or increased sensitivity is caused when the dentine is exposed. The dentine is the inner layer of a tooth that is normally covered by enamel. Consequently, hypersensitivity can be caused by a number of reasons: –          Abrasion lesions due to excessive tooth brushing: This causes the exposure of the roots. Since the roots are not covered by enamel, the dentine will be exposed, thus causing sensitivity to hot and cold. –          Fractured tooth: Sometimes a tooth can be fractured due to excessive occlusal force, tooth wear or because of expansion of filling materials. This fracture line causes exposure of dentine and will result in hypersensitivity. –          Decayed tooth: When the enamel layer of the tooth is decayed, the dentine will be exposed, thus causing sensitive teeth. –          Cracked tooth syndrome: A crack in the tooth will provide a passage between the external environment and the nerve of the tooth. This will result in sensitivity to hot/cold, water and mechanical forces (such as when one is chewing) It is best to consult your dentist when you start feeling hypersensitivity reactions. Treatments might range from using anti-sensitive toothpaste and oral hygiene instruction to covering the exposed dentine with dental restorative materials.   For more information, visit: Home – Hornsby Dental or give us a call on (02) 8090 1100 for more information and to speak with one of the Hornsby Dentist | Hornsby Dental team members.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Hornsby Dental | Hornsby Dentist: Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth normally erupt at around 18 – 25 years old. However it is not uncommon for these teeth to erupt at a later age or not to erupt at all. The wisdom tooth can either erupt straight, tilted at an angle or they can even erupt sideways . Most of the time, an X ray is needed to see the position of the wisdom tooth whilst it is still under the gums. If it is positioned at angle or if it is growing sideways, you might need to take your wisdom tooth out. This is because food can get trapped easily between the wisdom tooth and the adjacent tooth and this will allow the growth of bacteria. Due to the position of this tooth, it is often difficult to clean. Consequently, this will increase the risk of bacterial growth and caries development. Most people also prefer to get their wisdom tooth out as it may interfere with orthodontic treatment. If there is not sufficient space in the jaw, the alignment of your teeth might change due to the force generated by the eruption of your wisdom tooth. For more information, visit: Hornsby Dental or give us a call on (02) 8090 1100 for more information and to speak with one of the Hornsby Dentist | Hornsby Dental team members for any questions that you may have.

Children’s teeth

Children’s Teeth Did you know, children start getting their permanent teeth as young as the age of 6? Once these permanent teeth are decayed there is no 3rd set of teeth to replace them. This is why a having your children practicing good home oral care absolutely is essential to help them keeping their smile nice and healthy. It is advised that you start bringing in your child to the dentist from an early age. It is common for children not to cooperate with a dentist for their first visit, but explaining what is going to happen and preparing them for their visit will help. Often just familiarity with going to the dentist with Mum, Dad or other siblings is enough to prepare them. Why do I need a scale and clean?

Going to the dentist for a scale and clean is important because it allows teeth and gums to be healthy and strong. The dentist goes around each individual tooth looking for plaque and hard build up called tartar which he removes from teeth. When gums bleed it is because there is bacteria on the teeth that has not been removed. With regular brushing and visiting the dentist frequently (every six months), teeth and gums can be kept in optimal condition. Crowns

Hornsby Dentist information about Crowns: One of the interesting things that dentists face in today’s society is that many of us are keeping a majority if not all of our teeth well into old age. This can be contributed to the improvement of overall oral hygiene through public awareness and national initiated schemes such as fluoridation. However as we keep many of our teeth, unfortunately, there are some instances when our teeth need a helping hand to withstand the rigors of everyday life. In some circumstances compromised teeth may require treatment to protect it from further breakdown and ensure continued pain free function while at the same time be aesthetically pleasing. Although as dentists we endeavour to be conservative in our treatment, sometimes it is necessary to suggest to patients to possibility of a crown to protect the remaining damaged tooth structure. It does so by totally covering the remaining tooth and to prevent any future damage. Many people have heard of crowns, however are unsure of when a crown is indicated.
